  • Sanibel has been designated a “Bike Friendly Community” at the Silver Level by the League of American Bicyclists. Only three other Florida communities enjoy the “Silver” designation.

Tips For Biking Routes on Sanibel

Explore Sanibel Bike Trails on Google Maps“Ding” Darling Refuge, try two-wheeling for a close-up encounter.

The entire loop from the Education Center, through the Refuge and back to the center via the Sanibel-Captiva Road (a.k.a. San-Cap Road) bike path, is about 8 miles, all paved. Or you may want to follow the unpaved shortcut on the Cross-Dike Trail near the Refuge’s entrance.

Nature-lovers bike the “conservation corridor” path paralleling San-Cap Road, which leads to “Ding” Darling, SCCF and other environmental attractions. Here there are few cyclists and driveways, which makes biking more pleasurable than on some of the well-traveled path sections along Periwinkle Way. Try the loop off Sanibel-Captiva Road that runs parallel to Rabbit Road on the backside of its homes, ending at West Gulf Drive. From there you can turn left and circle around on Tarpon Bay Road, past the beach and Bailey Tract (where bikes are allowed, but must be walked in parts), then back to San-Cap Road.

Another favorite by-bike destination along San-Cap Road is Bowman’s Beach, north of the Refuge. At the Blind Pass Bridge to Captiva Island, the bike path ends and pedaling can become a bit treacherous on Captiva’s twisty road, especially in the busy winter season. But if you’re staying in Captiva Island’s “downtown” area, by all means rent a bike to explore the nearby sights and shopping.

5 star rating Wonderful Jack and I had a wonderful time at the Island Inn. The location was perfect. So nice to have the beach outside our door. I have brought back a lot of seashells to have fun with and display.

My favorite restaurants were Doc Ford, Tutti's, and Gramma Dots.

Thank you!!

5 star rating Absolute perfection........... This place is absolutely fantastic. Ken, in the office, is quite the gracious and helpful host. He covered everything. The accommodations could not be any better. Everything you need is right there, from a fully equipped kitchen to bathroom toiletries. All you have to do is show up. I definitely recommend it, and we are looking forward to our next visit.

5 star rating GREAT INN !! We booked our reservations before Hurricane Milton and were worried we wouldn’t be able to go. The hotel staff did a great job keeping us informed of the conditions of the hotel. They reassured us that the hotel was up and running and waiting for our visit. The staff are great and so helpful with any questions we had. Island Inn also offers quests a free educational tour of the beach from Sea School Staff. It was very helpful with sea shell identification. The room was spacious and very clean. We had a great view of the ocean. The beach was spectacular for shell collecting. We when to two public beaches and the shells were very sparse. Most of our meals were grocery items from Jerry’s store. We did eat at Doc Fords the Peel and eat Yucatan Shrimp was fabulous. I will forever compare any shrimp dish to this. The island had storm damage and I’m hoping they recover quickly. Take the friendly staff advice and use bug spray for no-see-ums, they are awful.
