Planning Your Sanibel Vacation

Since 1895, people have chosen the Island Inn as their Sanibel retreat. The historic Island Inn beachfront resort has worked hard ever since to make sure the vacation you imagined and looked forward to, turns into a sandy, sunny reality. Let us know how we’re doing!

Choosing a Sanibel Island Resort

Planning a Florida vacation can be a pretty overwhelming task. Gulf or Atlantic coast? Flying or driving? Condo or camper? For many, Sanibel and Captiva Islands are the only choice. But even then, you have a big job ahead of you; how to choose a Sanibel Island resort? Don’t let this process take all the fun out of planning your vacation!

Sanibel Conservation Walking Tours

As a Sanibel beachfront resort, the Island Inn obviously cares a lot about the state of our beach. We want it to be clean, and it is, but that doesn’t mean it should be tidy! We’re a traditional place – we’ve been providing Sanibel Island vacation lodging on this property since 1895 – but one tradition we don’t practice is raking up the bits of seaweed and sea grasses that come ashore with the waves. Those organic materials are an important part of the island’s ecosystem, supporting birds, plants and other wildlife our guests expect and deserve to experience.

Planning Your Florida Beach Vacation

Are you headed for the beach? A Florida vacation may be just the thing. Any beach will do, right? Well, we’d hate for the secret to get out, but a lot of people think there is no substitute for a Sanibel beach. Arthur Frommer agrees, he rated Sanibel Island as his top vacation destination … in the world!

Come on Down – Sanibel Weather is Fine!

Technically speaking, summer is over. Fortunately, the weather on Sanibel Island doesn’t seem to concern itself with technicalities. You might not be concerned either, especially if you are spending part of this fall or winter stretched out on Island Inn’s beach with warm sand under your heels.

Sanibel Island Birding

In every season, Sanibel Island bird watching can set even the most experienced birder’s heart racing. The abundance of species is almost overwhelming. Even year-round residents such as herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, ospreys, spoonbills, storks, moorhens, bald eagles and more!

Sanibel Island Biking

A Cyclist’s-Eye View of Sanibel Island

As Sanibel’s oldest resort, Island Inn has relaxation down to a science. And like most worthy pursuits, true relaxation, true vacation, is a multi-faceted pursuit. In other words, we know you want to come here to sit on the beach. By all means, we want you to sit on the beach, but we also know that mixing it up with fine dining, shopping and touring will make your stay even more enjoyable. Go on, grab a bike and tour Sanibel!

Sanibel Island Fishing

Whether you are a serious angler or a rank amateur with a rented rod, the waters off Sanibel and Captiva islands offer some of the best fishing in all of southwest Florida. Casting from knee-deep just off Island Inn’s own shoreline, guests pull in handsomely sized Sea Trout, Snook, Redfish and even Tarpon. Pier fishing is also popular, usually requiring heavier tackle for larger species such as Grouper and Snapper.

Sanibel and Captiva Island Resorts Serve up Island Culture

Sanibel and Captiva Island Resorts Serve up Island Culture

Many of our Island Inn resort guests say that staying on Sanibel or Captiva Island has ruined all of the other beach spots for them. At Island Inn, we’re happy that’s true.

Sanibel’s Lodging Choices Unique to Island Culture

In many ways, a place like Sanibel Island should not exist. At 33 square miles, it’s the same size as Manhattan and is nestled up to the teeming southwestern Florida coast, but those comparisons fall flat in light of its 6,100-person population. One aspect, lodging on Sanibel, highlights the stark contrast with the rest of the Gulf coast; you simply won’t find high-rise condos or super sized chain hotels here.
