Are Vacations To Sanibel Island Good For Us Physically?

Many Island Inn guests say that Sanibel Island is just what the doctor ordered. It turns out, that might be more than a figure of speech.

Holiday stress or bitter-cold weather, the negative effects of the winter season can become quite debilitating. The winter weather may already be taking its toll on your body. Here are a few ways to detect the early warning signs and suggestions for overcoming the winter blues.

Sign: Your body craves more sleep

Below zero temperatures can make getting out of bed in the morning excruciating. Physically, you feel drained. But more sleep isn’t the answer. In fact, doctors say too much sleep (more than nine hours per day) can lead to a number of medical problems, including diabetes, heart disease, headaches, depression, heart disease, back trouble and obesity. Research shows over-sleepers suffer from symptoms of anxiety, low energy, memory loss, and a constant need for sleep.

Cure: Trade in the harsher climate of the north for the more temperate, year-round weather of Sanibel Island. The sandy beaches provide more than 22 miles beaches – and a vast array of activities. Island Inn, Sanibel Island’s premier hotel and resort, provides ample opportunity to motivate you, from a picturesque walk on the 10 acres of private beach to kayaking and paddleboarding. With so much to fill your days, you’ll be more likely to have restful nights and get the kind of sleep your body needs.

Sign: Sore Throat and Cough

The cold winter often limits our activities, trapping us indoors. Dusty Christmas decorations and tight spaces are the perfect breeding ground for the common cold and indoor seasonal allergens. Mold and mildew thrive in warm, moist environments with limited ventilation. Dust mites love to set up shop inside of mattresses and pillows. Indoor seasonal allergens like pet dander and dust mites can create havoc on your winter wonderland. Common signs of an allergy include itchy eyes, runny nose, coughing and sneezing.

Cure: Island Inn prides itself on providing guests with pleasant and quality accommodations one would expect from Sanibel Island’s most established Inn. And though we work hard to make your room inviting, most of our guests spend most of their time on Sanibel outdoors. Year-round it will be easy to get the 20 minutes of sun exposure recommended by physicians to rejuvenate the body with vitamin D.

A vacation to Sanibel Island and the Island Inn has many physical benefits. It seems that a big dose of fun, relaxation and ocean breezes truly are good for us!

A Day in the Life of an Island Inn Guest

I am really looking forward to our first day at Island Inn on Sanibel Island. We arrived last evening just after dark and were tired from our long drive. Boy is it quiet here; don’t know why I woke up. It’s still dark outside and my wife is still asleep. I guess I’m just used to getting up early.

We left the windows open while we slept. I’m glad we did that because I love breathing that beautiful salt air! I can just barely hear the waves sloshing on the shore. It sure is a relaxing sound – maybe I’ll just lay back and listen for a few minutes while I decide what to do next…

Visitor Reviews

5 star rating A Sunny Return We returned to The Island Inn for our first visit since Hurricane Ian and was heartened to see construction underway and Sanibel rebounding. We had a beautiful ocean-view room for six nights in the Matthews Lodge, which was extremely quiet and included a screened in balcony patio and a fully equipped kitchen. The staff was very attentive and friendly. We encourage you to support this historic property.
