License-Free Saltwater Fishing Day
Hit the shores or hop on a boat with no need for a fishing license on the Saturday after Thanksgiving! See what kind of fish you can snag on this hall pass day. Our friends over at Whitney’s Bait & Tackle have the down low on all things Sanibel fishing as well as rod and reel rentals. The saltwater waiver applies to any recreational harvest requiring a saltwater fishing license (e.g., crabbing, lobstering, scalloping, etc.) as well as fishing from shore or a boat. A snook or spiny lobster permit are also not required on these days. Make sure to come back and tell us all about your lucky catch after a successful day of sunshine and scales!
Sanibel Masters Art Festival
After you have enjoyed your Thanksgiving meal, stroll through the Masters Art Festival. This annual event is held on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving from 9am-4pm. Admission is free at the Sanibel Community House. 2173 PERIWINKLE WAY , SANIBEL, FL 33957. This festival has been a Sanibel Island Thanksgiving weekend tradition for 20+ years. It showcases paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor, drawings and pastels, 2D and 3D mixed media and collages, photography and digital art, woodworking, sculpture, ceramics, glass, fiber art, and jewelry produced by no more than 100 artists and artisans from around the country. (There are 70 outdoor booths and 30 indoor spaces.) Because of the size of the show, visitors have the opportunity to interact with the artists, learn a little about their inspiration, find out how they made their artworks, and purchase fine works of art at reasonable prices directly from the artists (or commission a specific work of art if they do not find precisely what they want). In addition to fine art and crafts, the festival is renowned for its gourmet food booths and live entertainment.
